Mechouia salad or Slata Mechouia (or Mechouiya) is a salad of Tunisian/Moroccan origin made with roasted peppers and tomatoes. Follow this super simple recipe to make it at home and delight your guests’s taste buds.

You can serve it with olives, hard-boiled eggs or tuna flakes.

Grill the vegetables for the Mechouia salad.

Preheat your oven to 200°C on the fan setting.
Place your peppers, tomatoes and garlic cloves on a baking tray. Roast them until the skin blackens slightly, then remove them from the oven.

Preparation of Slata Mechouia

Place the peppers in a sealed plastic bag (or freezer bag) and leave them to cool.
Meanwhile, peel and deseed the tomatoes and chop them into small cubes. Peel the garlic cloves and crush or chop them. Once cooled, peel and deseed the roasted peppers as well. The skin should come off easily thanks to the condensation in the sealed bag.

Chop the vegetables

In a salad bowl, mix together the tomatoes, peppers and roasted garlic cloves. Chop everything up using two knives, or you can also blend them in a food processor (without making the mixture too liquid).

Mechouia Salad Dressing

Once the mixture is finely chopped, season your mechouia salad with ground caraway, cayenne pepper, olive oil and lemon juice. Mix well.

You have made a delicious Slata Mechouia at home. You can serve it with olives, a few hard-boiled eggs on the side and flaked tuna.
